We live in a culture that worships productivity, security, and money. None of those things are bad in and of themselves. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to worship God alone.
It is normal to spend most of our days tending to the basic things of life like working, keeping our homes, and taking care of loved ones. But we should not become so preoccupied with those earthly things that we lose sight of the bigger purpose of why God called us to do those things in the first place. The Bible says:
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
(NIV, Matthew 6:33)
As we seek God, we will want to serve others in our lives and take care of our responsibilities. But seeking God first will ensure that we have the right motivation behind taking care of the things of life.
God promises that as we live in the light of eternity and not have any idols before Him, He will provide for our earthly needs. The Bible says:
“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
(ESV, Matthew 6:26)
We still have to tend to our daily responsibilities, but as we work as unto the Lord and put Him first, He promises to provide for what we need. So we don’t need to worry about our needs not being met, and instead, we can have peace of mind and trust God’s promises.
