Eternal Refuge

This past year of uncertainty has challenged me to trust God with my life more and stop trying to control everything in my life. God showed me areas of my life that I needed to surrender to Him, areas with which I had to trust Him.

This past year has especially taught me that while it’s good to plan for the future, ultimately God is the one who is in control of my future. And I have to hold my future with an open hand, surrendering it to Him moment by moment.

I decided to paint a house to represent a place of security. While our plans and our future may be uncertain, if we have trusted Jesus with our lives, then our eternal future is certain and secure.

I think this Bible verse captures it well:

“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”

NIV, Psalm 91:2

While we may experience struggles in the present, we can trust God to work everything out for our eternal good. The Bible says:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

NIV, Romans 8:28

It is important to notice, however, that things work for good only for those who have a relationship with God.

None of us are good enough to have a relationship with God. We all have sinned. But Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross has atoned for our sins. Everyone who believes in Jesus will be forgiven and made right with God.

I painted the roof in red color to represent Jesus’s blood covering our sins.  Everyone who comes to Jesus is eternally safe. And I painted the green grass and flowers blooming all around the house to represent new life in Christ. The Bible says:

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

NLT, 2 Corinthians 5:17
